Kente Cloth and Good Conversation

June 30, 2021

I learned a lot about Kente cloth. About how the colors and patterns on the fabric mean different things in different tribes. And I learned a lot about the Ghanaian culture. How rich and vibrant the people are. Kente cloths are typically worn by royalty within the tribes and are often worn to commemorate special occasions. All of that made perfect sense after Tierra told me that her husband, Ibn, says that “Kings raise kings.” That was the basis for this newborn session. This family dives deep into their heritage and history. They are well-rounded people with a knowledge about their family that others can only dream of knowing. I could have talked to them for hours, and we pretty much did just that. Eks was a dream to photograph. But the time we all spent together was what made the session so impressionable and memorable.

Tierra is so bubbly and full of life.

I asked about 100 questions to about 100 different things, and both her and Ibn were so patient and kind to answer. They helped open my eyes to a variety of things going on in the world and in our country today. We talked about rising kids and having families. And about jobs and diverse parts of the country. Everything about our time together was so enlightening for me and so special. I truly value this family; I value their honesty and openness. And the fact that they made such a perfect little man, made this session even better!

Eks was an angel. I mean, not only did he look like an angel, but he slept like one and was so content where he was. He was awake for half of the session which actually was perfect because then I could see his beautiful brown eyes. Hearing Ibn and Tierra in the background commenting on how perfect he was and how handsome he looked made my heart leap for joy. I kept hearing Tierra say, “I just love him. He’s perfect.” And is absolutely is!

Tierra, thank you so much for reaching out to me for this session! I enjoyed our conversation and learning so much about your family! Eks is a dream, and I’m so excited for your family as you continue down this adventure! I hope to see you all again soon.
